Hello. My name is Angeliki Dedopoulou, and today we will learn how artificial intelligence is used in the energy sector.

As a technological transformation from analogue to digital advances, digital technologies like AI will make energy systems more connected, intelligent, efficient, reliable and sustainable. Digitisation, including artificial intelligence, can innovate the way energy is used and help find solutions for decarbonising energy systems.

There are potential advantages of AI along the entire energy value chain ranging from generation to transport, distribution, supply, and consumption. AI and digitisation could also help integrate the growing share of renewable energy by delivering flexible electricity systems that provide the modern science solutions and energy storage, including for sectors that are difficult to decarbonise.

A system-wide approach is needed so that digitisation of energy can help deliver on the European Commission’s ambitions and political priorities, including the European Green Deal and making the EU fit for the digital age.

Artificial intelligence’s extensive use of data also comes with a set of challenges that requires preserving high-levels of privacy, security, safety and ethical standards, particularly in the cybersecurity markets. Ensuring that the ICT sector is efficient and renewable based on its energy use is also very important for this sector that is growing rapidly. In addition, the development of digital solutions means infrastructure fit for the future with common standards, gigabyte networks and secure clouds for both the current and the next generation. Energy efficiency, renewables, infrastructures, artificial intelligence can play all an important role in the energy sector.

We must embrace AI to ensure that the EU will use more efficient and green energy sources.
